Some of the icons I'm getting done represent income, gold etc.

Chris asked if we already had a currency symbol, and as we didn't cam eup with one.

My first though was chinese yuan when I saw it.

Here are some choices, please post which one you want, or suggest an alternative.

Again, this needs to be done quickly.

6 and 2. 7 reminds me of Yen.

So with a choice of currency symbols, 2 look a bit like the dollar (1 and 4) and 1 looks a lot like the chinese yuan or japanese yen.

I find it amusing that a group comprised mostly of Americans, picked the symbol that looks like chinese currency rather than american. You trying to tell us something :)

Based on the posts, it would seem that most of you like symbol 7. But, as bootsy pointed out, and I pointed out in the first post, I think it looks too much like an existing currency symbol.

Next choice seems to be number 6, so that's the one we'll go with.

I've had a play with making the same symbol using a variety of fonts as the basis, and in the end settled on the simplest and most tested. For those of you who have reason to replicate the symbol, here's the simple guide to how the one going into the icons will work.

I picked the least dollar looking because the dollar is a pretty well known symbol and this is a fantasy universe.

4 is basically USD cut in half ;)

Maybe a backwards US dollar, but not nearly as close as 1.

I dont think youre qualified to speak on issues such as the American dollar.

I think of the dollar sign as an "S" so triangles are not involved.

That is kind of a new way to look at the dollar sign. Never really thought of looking at that way and I can now understand why you didn't want to use the ones that reminded you of it. The reasons I didn't go for them personally was that it reminded me of "greater than" and "less than" signs.

Wonder if originally the dollar sign was shaped like triangles and we just used the "S" for simplification.

Unlikely, although no one is sure where it came from. Likely came from silver pesos, which was a s transposed over a p.

Was thinking about this earlier today, don't ask me why, and wanted to ask a question.

What is the currency called? This may have a large impact on what symbol it should have.

I can see where you're going, but in this case it doesn't really make a difference.

Your suggestion is based around currency tending to look like the letter, but the Tonan runes are different from the western alphabet.

Which means it'd need to be based on the Tonan runes (which are incomplete).

There is no reason why the symbol can't just be the rune for gold.
