Post To save a rainbow (OPEN)
OOC ~ This thread is meant to be fun and lighthearted. Please keep it that way and enjoy the silliness that is Acantha! /OOC

The cold white stuff kept falling from the sky. Acantha took a few steps and scooped up yet another handful studying it carefully. It melted and began boiling yet again.

It has to be rain that for some reason has frozen. She whisper’s in awe.

This did not bode well for the fairy whose home was normally a plane of fire. To live in a world of frozen rain, how could creatures survive here? It was simply to dreadful to Acantha’s thinking.

The small clearing in which she had woke up in only minutes before now contained a large pool of water ankle deep. Her own body heat was melting the accumulating frozen rain almost before it could land, and yet she was shivering so hard that her knees kept banging together painfully. She had to get moving, she might very well freeze solid as the rain had apparently done, and that just would not be acceptable. A frozen fire fairy would be bad.

It hurt to walk in odd white stuff, her feet prickled with every step. Unfurling her wings, she takes to the sky. She is still awed by the frozen rain and does not see the tree in front of her. With a dull thud she flies into the old oak and falls to the ground. Gently rubbing the small bump that has quickly formed on her head she decides that the prickling of her feet is much less painful than the untimely meeting of the tree. A nice walk would be good exercise for her. She heads off in no particular direction inspecting the landscape as she does.

It’s cold, but it makes the world look enchanted, this frozen rain.

Her mind is whirling with questions that have no answers. First and foremost is how does the rain freeze?

There is light, so there must be sun somewhere. Everyone knows the sun is hot; surely it should stop the rain from freezing shouldn’t it? Unless the sun has gone on vacation, but in that case then where is the light coming from?

The frozen rain has tapered off, but that does not stop Acantha’s curious mind from its circle of questions. The beauty of the stuff is breathtaking. The rainbow that is sure to form soon should look doubly magnificent with the backdrop of white covering the world. She looks for the rainbow. First to the North, they seemed to form to the North more often than not, but she sees no rainbow in that direction. She turns to the West, nope not one there either. South and East have no rainbow either. What is this? There is always a rainbow after it rains.

The logic that is Acantha’s mind suggests the obvious. It’s frozen of course.

Poor rainbow, stuck frozen solid, it must have stood still to long. She shakes her head in pity for the poor unfortunate rainbow.

I shall find the rainbow and with all the heat my small body can muster attempt to save it from its frosty doom. She declares to the trees. She heads north. Not knowing where the rainbow is stuck but knowing that is the general direction most rainbows appear it is the most logical place to start her search.

Not to far away from where Acantha had awakened another being stalked through the half frozen trees. Venorik had his wings wrapped portectively around his large ebon frame warding off the snow. For being a native of the rather hot abyss the ten foot tall demon did not enjoy the cool. His thick hide seemed to keep him warm enough though, as Venorik only wore a wolf's hide loincloth the rest of his body bare. Showing of a powerful frame, muscles seemed to ripple across is body everywhere as he moved. Beside him came a two-headed hound, one set of eyes a deep purple, the other azure. The dog was bounding around in the snow like a puppy. Barking its heads off and nipping at the snow as it fell. Venorik just shoke his horned head as he watched his old friend. He wondered how Max, which happened to be the dual headed dogs name, could always get so excited about the simplest things.

He continued to move throught the trees leaving large tracks in the snow behind him. The demon was here to get away from the hustle of kingdom life. Which seemed odd since he was a chaos demon, but Venorik prefer certian kinds of chaos to others. Besides he had left his kingdom in Kylar's hands his chief advisor. He'd keep the chaos smoothly running in the kingdom, if would could be said to smoothly run chaos. Venorik grinned to himself display at set of razor sharp teeth as he looked down at Max once more. Maybe he would find a frost giant to battle out here or other such entertainment. Suddenly the demon stopped, his pupil-less crimson eyes swirling in slow circles as he scanned the woods around him.

"Quiet Max"

Venorik said as he sniffed at the air letting the scents around him fill his nostrils. Max growing silent and doing the same on the alert now. Fairy? Yes the demon certianly smelled fairy. Venoriks grin grew larger then it had in a long time. For fairy's held a special place in his heart. If things such as he could even be said to have hearts that is. They where his favourite creatures upon his plane and almost every other one. Often spreading chaos with there light hearted mischief. Which only added to their appeal for the chaos born. He started in the direction the fairy scent had come from. For it had been a long time since he had seen one of there kind. Things where definitely starting to look brighter to the demon. He reckoned he would catch up to the fairy soon.

There are horrors, and then there are Horrors. Some things exist in the world that, while decidedly ucky in a not-right way by any objective standard (and most subjective ones), really don't warrant a capital H. Then there are the sort of mind-shattering terrors that stalk the night and devour the souls of the innocent like tasty snack-cakes with tea on a lazy sunday afternoon.

Now that we've spent a paragraph building up expectations, let me clarify that the following is indeed an accounting of the former sort. A predictable one perhaps, but worth the telling on a nice day like today right after a good snowfall (since it brings out the Smell, although not as well as rain).

This particular horror, nameless only because the wizard who put it together in the first place couldn't think of anything decently blood curdling and couldn't stand to go with 'Hubert' right off the last grave-stone, was at that particular moment stalking just behind something that it's dim and destitute mental faculty recognized as a familiar sort of face. Which isn't to say it knew the demon, or could even claim to, just that it knew a demon and his dog when it saw one. Or at least it had a pretty good idea, which was saying a lot for this particular creature.

Bear in mind, not more than a half hour ago or so, this same horror was gazeing into the sky looking bewildered in an immensly stupid sort of way catching snowflakes on what a very generous person might have assumed to be it's tongue.

It wasn't quite sure what to do about the current situation, especially since it was broad-daylight out. For the moment, lacking the sheer brain-power to come up with any really good ideas, the horror settled into it's default behaviour. It lurked, somewhere behind Venorik and crept along in utter, trackless, and above all creepy silence.

Creepity creepity.

Snow

Cold, white, beautiful snow.

How long had it been since she had seen snow? Too long, apparently. She flew among the feather light flakes, chasing the larger ones as they fell lightly to the ground, revelling in the cold shivers they caused as they melted on her skin. As she played amongst the snowfall, she noticed a very large shadow, flanked by a much smaller one. Remaining unseen, she flew closer, to determine the identity of the two shadows.

Upon closer inspection, the large shadow was a demon with a double set of horns, wearing only a loincloth. In this cold air, he must have a very good internal heat to walk about like that! At his side was a two headed dog. A two headed dog?? She hadn't seen a two headed dog since she had known one named Max. Could it be? Diving in a little closer, she determined that it was indeed Max. Oh, this was perfect. She knew who the demon was now, although, he had evolved since she had seen him last.

Finding herself a patch of good deep snow, she lands, and gathers a large amount, forming it into a ball, large for her kind, but about right for the demon. Just enough. As she forms the ball, she notices another shadow following the large demon, but is unable to determine the identity of it. Well, then perhaps her snowball would have a double purpose, or else perhaps this would turn out to be a wonderful free for all.

The snowball packed to her liking, the fairy takes off into the sky and swoops towards the large demon, and sends the snowball on it's mission. With great precision, it hits the demon on the back of his head, and she darts away to a large clump of trees, to watch as the demon jumps in surprise, and turns to see who was attacking him. She silently laughs, her small hands covering her mouth, as he shudders when the snow melts, sending icy rivulets of water down his back.

Venorik stopped following the scent of fairy for a second. Looking around he felt as if something was watching him. Yet he couldn't see anything. All he could hear was silences and everything appeared to be normal. He was just about to get going again when *SMACK* he was hit in the back of the head by something cold. Venorik spun around in circles snowing flying everywhere has he clawed feet churned up the ground. Still he saw nothing as he brought his hand up too the back of his head. Snow? Who would dare throw snow at him? Why if he got his hands on them he would rip them limb from limb. Then the demon froze his eyes growing wide with surprise.

"It cannot be..."

Venorik said a familiar scent feeling his nose. The scent of another fairy, one he had known in ages past. Surely it could not be her though that was long ago and she would not still be wandering these lands or would she? Venorik was still wandering them so such things were possible. An amused smirk crossed the large demon's face. So she thought she could hit him with snowballs did she? Did she not know who she was dealing with? He was the lord of mischeif and chaos. He sniffed at the air again finding that her scent lead to a cluster of trees. He wondered if she was still hiding there. Only one way to find out. The demon gather snow forming a massive snowball even large for one of his size.

The demon looked down at it grinning mischief gleaming in his eyes. He didn't intend to throw the snowball right at her. No never that. It was far to big and might crush her. He had no intention of doing that. Venorik hefted the large ball of snow up with two hands bring it over his horned head. He heaved it in the direction of clump of trees. The taking off into the air he quickly followed it and just has it passed over the trees he smashed in with a mighty two-handed blow. The ball was pulverized breaking into a hunderd small peace to rain down on the trees below. Hopefully one of them would hit the little fairy, Venorik thought. Laughing he flapping his wings turning around and landing where he had been standing before. Readying himself for another onslaught of the cold snow.

She watched and laughed as the huge demon churned up the snow around him trying to see who had nailed him with a snowball. As she watched she saw surprise steal over his face, his red eyes growing wide as he recognized her scent.

"This must come as a bit of a shock to him!" she mused. For she had not been to this land for a very long time. Even now, she was not entirely sure how she came to be there, anyway. It was almost as if she had been transported there magically.

As she watched the demon, he gathered a massive ball of snow, gazing at the cluster of trees she was hiding in the entire time he built it. With a large grin on his face he tossed the snowball directly at the trees, but just high enough to go over them, took off and headed straight for her trees.

"Ooops. I think I had better take cover here....."she yelps.

As she begins to head for cover the demon, who had taken off after the snowball, reached the large missile, and smashing it with his fist, sent millions of smaller ones to fall into the cluster of trees. Swiftly, she darts underneath the branch she had perched on and put her back against the trunk of the tree. Snow fell heavily to each side of the branch she sheltered under, some hitting it and making the entire branch bend and sway.

Managing to miss most of the barrage of snow, she smiles and looks to where she had seen the demon go, and sees him watching the area he had bombarded, expecting a retaliation. Very well, she thought. He didn't know that she had grown and evolved as well. Reaching deep within herself, she caused the snow laying on the ground around his feet to swirl upwards, cocooning him in a veritable snow tornado.

Max watched as all this was happening, one head on his master, the other on the trees. He was the only one to see her emerge from cover, and head straight towards the demon. As she came behind him, the blinding snow fell back to the ground, and she hovered behind him.

Very quietly she says "Guess who?" And waits for the inevitable dunking in the snow.

Swish, squelch, swish, went his footsteps.

Gold, schmold, the fat little man in the green suit muttered to himself.

Gold. Yellow stuff, like cheese. Cheese was good. Heavy yellow stuff, not quite so like cheese. And about as shiny as…well…about as shiny as old leather. He couldn’t see the attraction, even with its similarities to cheese. People made coins out of it, and so many people wanted to have it. But for what use? It wasn’t even good to eat, instead only hurting his teeth. No, he thought…it wasn’t really like cheese at all, more’s the pity. Now, give him a nice roast haunch of lamb, or better still, a nice roast whole lamb – along with some cheese of course – they would be much more to his taste. But not gold. It was, all in all, useless.

But of course, why was he out in this miserable weather? For none other reason than gold. Typical. Especially when the sky was trying to cover him in a blanket of white stuff. Rain was something he had respect for. He didn’t like it, but at least it was honest. It was wet, and unpleasant, and didn’t try to hide that. But snow…snow was tricky, and deceitful, and just plain horrible! It was wet, even though it tried to convince you that it wasn’t. It was heavy, too, heavier than it should be. It pretended that it was all light and feathery, but then it grabbed hold of your feet and didn’t want to let go.

How typical that he needed it now to find the rainbow. He dared not hope for the respite that would be rain; he suspected that the Gods would probably smile on him and send hailstones instead.

Of course his coming of age had to be in the middle of winter. Of course, his betters – or at least, his elders; he wasn’t yet convinced of their “betterness” – hadn’t seen fit to put off the start of his quest for another few months. Never that, he should be honoured to have been asked to go. But when he politely requested to take a pony on the journey with him? Oh no, what was he thinking? It was far too cold for animals to be outside their shelters. So, he had to set off in the blinding brightness of the falling snowflakes, in pursuit of his quest. Alone. To find a rainbow, or the bottom of one to be exact. To find his pot of gold that would supposedly be there. To prove himself worthy of his leprechaun heritage.

The Gods were surely smiling on him, or maybe laughing at him was more accurate. Such an honour, to be sent in search of a rainbow’s gold. He spat melting ice from his mouth. Bah.

So far as he was concerned, he would prefer to be a shepherd. With cows, too. Cheese. Lamb. Yum. But his mother wouldn’t hear of it. She wanted him to follow in the footsteps of his dear departed father and find his gold – whom she had neglected to mention had reputedly taken himself and his footsteps to a big city with all his gold, to set up a lucky charm shop, never to be seen or heard from again.

Considering, he decided that the only good to come out of this was to get away from her for a while at least – he could never understand her complaints to him about eating her out of house and home. He was a growing lad, six meals a day was little to ask! Although, little consolation it was to not have to listen to that any more – it was at least a couple of hours now since his last taste of cheese, or even meat. Life wasn’t meant to be like this!

Squelch, squelch, he went, as he continued on his journey northwards.
