As TuT crested the hill, he was confronted with the sight of Isonian banners of Isonia fluttering above a small group of embattled warriors. In their ranks he instantly spotted Taff. His old friend was a wizard renowned for - shall we say - the waywardness of the magik that he summoned. There was little to fear though, as he could clearly recognise the hulking forms of Zomb and James amongst the wizard's escorts.

He quelled his urge to join the fray and whet his sword with Rabble blood, and decided to relax for a while and take advagntage of what he hoped would be a grandstand seat to a bit of slaughter. He leaned back into the comfort of his saddle to watch the inevitable outcome of the battle.

A small band of archers could be seen crouched amongst the bushes at the edge of the forest, a very motley crew, their missiles had yet to find a mark. Behind them though lurked a pair of dangerous looking giants, surrounded by a large number of what looked like - underfed peasants. As TuT peered into the semi darkness of the dense foliage he caught a glimpse of their leader and soon after - his two elven henchmen. This was no band of brigands, there was more to this than met the eye.

Nudging Bethel in the ribs - he slipped back behind the hill - and began a gentle flanking movement to the rear of his friends assailants. Keeping the wind in his face prevented his scent from crossing the elven nostrils, he slipped unseen into position. As he dismounted, and silently strung his bow - he hoped that Taff had warded his party against the chaotic nature of his magik.

Suddenly he could hear the whining from an arrow. It struck only a few feet before Taff. Just seconds after another arrow came but missed with a hairbreadth. Taff turned around and faced the arrows source. He charged a large fireball and shot it straight at some bushse. Screams were heard and out came two flaming men. From some bushes further in the woods a bunch of men came running with long pikes in their hands. He turned his horse against them and he heard that his friends draw their swords behind them. Ah, poor men. They robbed the wrong people. he thought and started galopping towards them. Taff was already a bit ahead with his sword in one of his hands, and a new fireball in the other. He quickened his speed and rode up to Taff's side to be able to defend his flank better, and he noticed how the others did the same to him.

When they closened the enemy they stopped and arranged a line and lowered their pikes. Zomb stopped his horse and raised his hand to the others. He turned looked and smiled at Taff who released his fireball which burned the pikes woodenhandles. The men looked suprised on their small lumps til' they noticed that Taff and the others already had begun galopping against them again. They pulled their sworsd and prepared for the battle.

The pig was quickly dispatched, cleaned and prepared for preservation. The clearing soon became quieter as men drifted off to their sleeping rolls and other continued to sit by the fire. The murmur of their voices still heard above the sounds of the night. It wasn't too long before even they died away as sleep finally won them over.

My attention turned to the wagon and in particular the guards. I watched them as one after the other they settled against the end of the wagon. Sleep began to over take them. Their heads would droop and as the chin touched the chest in unison they would rouse awake for a moment. This happened several times before finally all that could be heard was the deep roaring noise of slumber.

This was my cue and I crept from the undergrowth. Instinctively blending with the shadows until finally I arrived at the wagon. I ducked low and positioned myself under the wagon. Just in time for one of the guards snorted loudly and woke himself up. He coughed, cleared his throat and spat. He settled again and soon the two men were again breathing in unison. My heart pounded loudly in my chest as I lifted the canvas covering the wagon. Suddenly I stopped and I felt the blood drain from my face. I moved closer to inspect what I had seen. It was a crest, the crest of the Vurumai. I placed my hand on the crest and traced its outline as my mind wondered back to a time long ago when...

I pulled my hand away as if I had been burnt; panic rose in my stomach and the urge to run was strong. I wanted to look further, but the urge to be as far away from anything to do with the Vurumai was stronger and it was all I could do to make my way back to the undergrowth at the edge of the clearing before breaking into a run. Without thinking I headed south, ironically moving closer to the lands of the Vurumai rather than away from them.

Furl felt the surge of magic just before the fireball flew past him. Moments later he heards the yell of pain of one of the foolish humans became engulfed in flames. The short squat goblin was concerned, they were not told about any mages. He drew from what little schooling he had in magic and cast a shield that would dispell any more fireballs thrown at them.
He looked ahead and saw that this had been too late for Jared and Pell, who had already lost their pikes to the flames. He shrugged, he'd never really liked them and this would mean more loot for him. He hefted his battle axe with both hands and let rip a bloodcurdling war howl as he charged towards the nearest traveller.

Taff glanced to his right and was glad to see Zomb towering there. His attention quickly returned to the fools ahead of them. Whilst his fireball had ridded them of their pikes, they would not remain unarmed for long. He remembered and old collegue's words, 'an unarmed anemy is by far the easiest to kill', the man had later been killed in a bar room brawl but that was of little consequence.
The rabble were starting to draw more weapons, so Taff accelerated towards them, closing the ground quickly. Two of the thugs drew their swords and moved to separate Taff from his comrades. He swung Icanthus in an arc, severing the closest man's sword arm. The flaming blade cauterised the blood as it cleaved flesh and bone. The stench of burning flesh started to fill the air as he brought the blde back round and hacked his neck. The burning sword did not completely separate the head from the body, but it was still a corpse as he turned to see the second hulk of a man swinging his heavy sword towards Taff's head.
Taff threw a firebolt to knock the thug off his balance, and pulled Icanthus free to turn aside the blow from the sword.
Something went wrong, the firebolt fizzled out as it was about to hit his chest. The great sword, caught Icanthus straight on instead of glancing off it, and the force knocked Taff off his feet.
What the... oh shi.. ooofff
He exclaimed, pretty much mirroring the thoughts going through his head. He fought the wind being knocked out of him, and dragged Icanthus up with both hands to block the next blow that was bearing down on him.

Succombing to the tedium of the road I was drifting in thought. Suddenly something pulled my attention back to the world of flesh. A queer sound ...a whistling, then sparks. Now flames were erupting, zomb's battle cry erupts and the pounding of hooves thunder in my ears. Looking up and immediately gripping my war spear tightly i notice two lurking figures behind the archers. They are very large and Zomb seems to be unaware of them as he crashes along.

My target set I raise my shield and level my spear in a lance like fashion. Knowing my armor's quality I do not consider the arrows a great threat, but the hulking giants are another issue. I spur my horse to a gallop charging the nearest giant. In the back of mymind I hope the amulet I am wearing provides protection from the fire raining down on our enemies.

In the midst of my charge I hear the metallic tinging sound of arrows glancing off armor and shield. I stear through the gaps created by Taff and Zomb, angling to the first hulking giant. As I close on the brute, who is braced for the impact, I aim high with my spear. At the instant before impact I lower my spear a bit, alligning it for the midsection of the giant. Hoping to come in under its defenses, but the brute was faster than his size suggested and my spear hit his hip with bone crunching force. The giant was thrown back but far from out of the battle.

It was at this point that a bone jarring fist sent me crashing to the ground. The second giant, equally fast, had manueverred to remove me from my horse. The speed of my charge, and the punches impact sent me flying out of arms reach of the giant as he lumberred towards my prone figure.
Bright flashes erupted in my head and searing pain shot down my right side. I drew my sword as I arose and prepared to square off against the second giant.

Once out of the clearing I ran. Not caring where I was going as long as it was as far away as possible. Tears streamed from my eyes tracking their way through the dust and grime. Leaving a strange pattern as if it were etched into my skin.

The need for distance from my own painful memories, causing me to be less careful than I might normally have been. Twigs snapped underfoot, branches and bushes clawed at my cloak as I ran. Tearing the already thread bare material, leaving a trail that any novice could track.

My breath drawn hard dried my mouth and lips as it forced its way into my lungs. The sounds around me were dulled, by the pulsing in my ears as my heart responded to this sudden burst of energy. I looked back to see if I was being followed. I could see nothing.

A little calmer now I gathered my cloak about me and returned my focus to the path ahead. Looking for a place to rest up for the remainder of the night. I soon spied a tree whose trunk was hollowed at the base. I crawled in, the scent of wild animal was strong and I guessed I was sharing the tree with some other benign resident. I shivered a little and hugged myself for warmth and soon feel into an uneasy sleep.

I slept long and woke mid morning to fine misty drizzle. The thought of and need for food drove me from the my sleeping place. I set off at a trot scanning the woods for places that might reveal hidden sources of food. It wasn't long before I spied the tell tale signs of pigs rooting. Coming to a halt at the base of the tree I dropped to my knees and scrapped aside the leaf litter and dug carefully into the friable soil. Several small orbs revealed themselves. Normally these fungi were cooked and imparted an interesting flavour to the foods they were with. I had no intention to light a fire and vigorously rubbed at the outside of the fungi till it rolled back to reveal the white inside. I removed all the outside and took a bite. The taste was sharp and earthy. I much preferred them cooked but today they would do to stave off starvation. I finished the fungi and returned the skin to the ground and buried it. Covering the spot again with leaf litter. The meal had not been filling but for now it would do as I set off at a trot. I gathered small amounts of food as I travelled and it was this activity I was engaged in when suddenly I found myself in the middle of a battle.

Instinctively I dropped to the ground and slithered into the shadows. I peered from the gloom trying to assess if I had been seen and what the best possible route for escape. My eye's widening in surprise as my mind that took in the scene before me. I recognised some of the faces involved and couldn't believe what I saw.... Vurumai

He saw Taff falling of his horse a few yards away. He runned to his help but he got stopped by a sword coming straight at his face. He blocked the strike with his sword but fell... when he hit the ground he swong his sword against the enemys feet and he got through the first leg but got stuck half way through the other. The mean screamed and fell to the ground. Zomb got up and began running to Taff again. But as he taken a step he felt an incredible pain in his right calf. The man had stabbed him with his knife. "Oh my, why didn't I finish him off" he thought...
He turned around and stabbed the lying man in the stomach with his sword.
Then began limping to Taff...

The gnomish bard had heard Taff's words in the Inn. Though he had only been passing through the area, he decided to join the quest. You never could tell when a good song writing opportunity would come along. Thus Canute had set out on his trusty war vixen, Rhapsody.
The pair were hurtling along at a quick pace. Canute singing as they went.

I saw a bird, witha yellow bill
It landed on my window sill
I coaxed him in, with a bit of leek,
and then I crushed his tiny beak.

He paused as they burst through the bushes confronted with a melee, some of whom he recognised from the night before. One of the less respectable men turned to face him, with a look he had seen many times before. A look that said 'hmmm, he looks like a soft target'. A look that was nearly always followed by a scream of pain. Not being one to miss an opportuniy, he spurred Rhapsody forward and burst into song once more.

I saw a man, with two hulking clubs,
and two ears, like washing tubs,
I charged at him, and with some luck
I turned him into, a EUNUCH!

Being a gnome, on fox back, Canute was just at the right height to inflict huge amounts of damage to a humans wedding tackle. As he passed betwwen the man's legs, he reached the end of the verse and planted a heftly blow from his gnomish battle axe right above his head. The man toppled and Canute just missed being by his body. More distressingly, he next few lines of his song were lost to the cries of agony from the new eunuch. He jumped atop the fallen man's shoulder and raised his voice.

...I enticed him in, with some bread,
and then I smashed his stupid head.

He burried his axe into his adversary's head, just behind his eyes, and the screaming stopped.

Right, I've taken one,
Now who else wanted some?

The second giant came in fast and strong. A huge swing from his club made my shield ring, and sent me stumbling back several steps. I waited till the giant lifted his huge club for another mighty swing. The timing was nearly perfect as I side stepped and chopped low with my sword. The giant howled in pain and white heat boiled in my right side. A broken rib at the very least, and worse it was stealing a portion of my sword arms strength. Even with my swing weaken the giants hamstring was severred and he crashed to the ground. I ran up the side of the huge beast prepared to finish him off when my shield rang a second time and I was lauched through the air to come crashing down hard and loud a second time. This was destined to be a very long day.

Lestrat narrowed his eyes in anticipation, the only outward sign of his emotions. Inside, he revelled in the thrill of combat, already his vision beginning to turn bloodred tinged with royal purple. Silently he willed himself down, slowly closing his eyes and calming himself.

Be wary, make the night your friend and the shadows your guide...

He set aside his great dark balde for now, Nightmare was too proud a weapon to hew the common soldier's neck, he prefered souls that were more... fitting. Continuing to concentrate and will himself into calmness, he opened his eyes to half mast, seeing and yet not seeing. Conjuring up a cloak of darkness, he rose, and suddenly with a furious burst of speed dashed off.

Lestrat had already noted the positions of TuT and Zomb, already making their move against the archers and the giants. Giants' skin is too tough for my fingers to rend... the archers on the other hand... Permitting himself a small thin smile of satisfaction, he darted forward and around, flanking the archers, who were firing from behind the relative saftey of the giants. With a bloodcurdling roar that he only projected in his mind and towards his first victim, confusing (not to mention scaring the hell out of the doomed man) him, he lashed out with clawed fingers, aiming for the jugular. The man jerked back with a horrible lurch, his hands feebly attempting to staunch the flow of blood. His companions, turning to see what was happening, were already too late in notching shaft to string; Lestrat already had swiftly darted away again. It was a slow process, and while he may not do much damage, and he could take on only one at a time and when they were not aiming at him, for after all he was indeed mortal and their shafts had a perfectly good chance of wounding him deeply, he was at least diverting their attention away from TuT and Zomb so they could deal with the giants without having to keep an eye on the archers.

He was about to dart in again when suddenly he dropped flat to the ground. Too late, the arrow had lodge itself deep into his shoulder. Too late, he realized that at least one among the archers was quick witted enough to guess his strategy and wait for his move while skulking in the shadows himself. He gritted his teeth, biting back a scream of pure rage and pain. The pain. It was excruciating. To hell with all the long training hours, toning his frail but wiry and (for his size) strong body against enemy weapons, it downright HURT very badly.

The archer, thinking that he had killed his target, or at least (correctly) assuming he had wounded Lestrat quite badly, walked up slowly, a cruel smile spreading across his face. He whipped out his dagger, evidently wishing to end the job himself. Lestrat looked up at him. The archer started for a moment, staring into Lestrat's eyes. The left was a very dark bloodred, almost black, shot with deep purple. The right was a deep forest emerald green. Lestrat stared back, no longer controlling and hiding his emotions like he usually did. There was pure fury, pure anger, pure RaGE, pure death. Already the sophisticated, almost aristocratically arrogant and cold yet polite demeanor was fading in him, and the animal was emerging... already the archer had stopped momentarily, his own eyes showing a sudden fear and startledness by this display of pure fury. And again it had passed, and the archer started forth.

Lestrat, his voice completely different from his usual one, opened his mouth. Deeper, harsher, colder, darker... the animal spoke.

I'm going to enjoy watching you die...

OOC- Just to inform, rage is spelled that way intentionally :) Personal meaning hehe

Rolling clear to buy time I force myself to my feet. The searing pain becoming common and the battle rage coming on in full. I disguard my batterred shield and weild my sword in a two handed manner. I cannot allow this battle to last much longer. The larger and stronger giants would gain the advantage as time passes. The spear tip, lodged in the giants hip, was greatly slowing his speed. I rush in fast under his club and lauch a series of thrusts and proceed past himto the fallen foe. With a great two handed, over the head swing i end his fight. The sword crashing down on his nose and eyes. Should he survive he would be blind. I turn to face the other giants charge more a lumber at this point than a charge. I set my feet preparing to move quickly as he closes the distance.

One of the rabble were preparing a giant blow on the Taff, who laid on the ground preparing to meet the attack. Zomb threw himself at the man and cut his throat with his knife. The mans sword fell powerless on Taff.

"Hey there Taff..." he said and looked around the battlefield. There weren't many enemies left now. And the arrows had stopped coming at them aswell... He saw James running between two giants. Running at one while running from one that falled to the ground screaming.
"We couldn't let James get all the fun enemies could we? Lets go help him..." he smiled.

Taff was grabbing some flame dust in his hand to throw in the looming figure's eyes when Zomb leapt at him from behind. In a thrice, the attacker had blood fountaining form his neck. Zomb let the body drop to the floor and the offensive sword clattered to the ground across Taff's legs. He kicked it off and jumped to his feet.

Hey there Taff Zomb greeted him as he got to his feet. Thanks Zomb he started, but to empty space as Zomb was headed towards a space where James was dispatching two giants. He looked about and saw but few attackers were still standing. A gnome, who looked vaguely familiar was in the process of beating a fully grown man to death, he seemed to have it in order so Taff sought out another foe.

An elf was retreating from the field of battle. Taff suspected that he was headed for reinforcements. Recalling a spell a sorceress had once taught him, one that did not rely on his fire magic that had just failed him, Taff sent a shard of solid air hurtling towards the elf. He aim was true, and a hole appeared where the elf's chest had been. The spell dispersed and the elf's innards fell into the gap in his chest.

Feeling drained, Taff steadied himself on a tree.

"Goddess be damned" I muttered under my breath. I fingered the worn and torn crest that lay crumpled in my pocket. It was the same as the distinctive crest that was emblazoned proudly across the tunics of those that were engaged in battle before me. The rabble I did not recognise and could well have been some of those that were inclined to fly no banner.

My body tensed as a Vurumai thumped on the ground inches from my hiding place. "Oomph" was the sound that escaped the big mans lips. He rolled aside and from somewhere he gathered the energy to raise himself to his feet before he set off after his target again. The fighting was frantic and I was pleased as this would mean they would be less likely to notice my presence, but it was beginning to subside as the rabble numbers lessened.

The giant was closing in more wearily than before, and I had an instant to scan the battle. There were few left as I watched an elf crumble to the ground, a gaping hole in its chest. Taff looked weary and it was about time to finish this. Then I noticed Zomb heading my way. My side ached and I could feel the welts swelling under my now chafing armor. I meneuver myself around the giant, placing its back to zomb. Throwing out a challenges to the beast as I moved. Gripping my great sword with both hands and hoping zomb could move in quickly enough to distract the beast at the right moment. If Zomb hits him from behind with surprise I could attack and quite possibly open its throat from the front.

The sight of the a figure, clad in a tattered cloak, springing out of the very earth itself startled TuT, and the arrow left it's bow - well wide of the mark. As the non-combatant fled the scene - it appreared strangely familiar. That would have to wait for now. Quickly knocking another arrow, he fired and the second elf plummeted to the ground.

The rest of the crew seemed to have the Rabble almost subdued as he drew his dagger to stelthiley seek out the leader of this motley crowd.

James had noticed Zomb's arrival. He was a smart fighter and he succeded with giving the Zomb the giants back free. He sprinted as fast as he could so the giant wouldn't have time to attack James... When he was a few feets away he jumped and stung his sword with all his powers in the giants crouch area. The giant screamed and flung with his arms in pain. The sword had went deep into the giants body. The only part of the sword that was left on the outside were the handle. Zomb got hit in the head by one of the giants arms and flew away several yards. And then all wen't black...

The planned attack was marvelous. Several inches of Zombs sword erupted from the giants chest, and the beast began a flailing frenzy. With the beast distracted i made my move quickly. A well aimed thrust into the neck of the giant. The giants eyes began to glass over immediately as his life's blood flowed freely from the two fatal wounds.

Glancing around I see Zomb laying prone behind the giant, but no other enemies are nearby. Bending to check Zombs wounds, I notice the severity of my own. Several broken ribs at the least. The right side of Zombs face is swelling and taking on a purple hue. He is breathing and alive though. I pull him to a nearby tree and whistle for my horse, who returns to my side. I retreive a water bottle and administer what aid I can to Zomb. Making Zomb as comfortable as possible and leaving my horse with him I look for other wounded. Carnage is strewn in every direction and the first giant is lying dead as well. This comes as a relief for I do not wish to fight another giant with my injuries and a fallen comrade nearby. Perhaps it is better for me to stand watch over my comrade at this point.

I quietly exited the scene of the fight. I heard the whistle and thwack of the arrow as it embedded itself in the tree next to me. I turned quickly to see if I was being followed. Everyone appeared to be involved in combat and so I shrugged the arrow off as being one that had missed its target.

I quickly and quietly moved deeper into the forest. Using all the skills of stealth my father had taught. I soon came to a little crick that tumbled and gurgled its way toward the ocean. Pausing for a moment I scanned the area and quickly spied what I was looking for. I entered the crick and followed its bed with the water flow until I came to the large branch that spanned its width.

The branch creaked a little as I hoisted my slight frame up onto it. Standing and steadying myself I gingerly walked its length before making the easy leap to the next tree beside it. I climbed the tree until I found a place where I could easily move to another tree and from there on to others. My tattered cloak leaving the evidence of my existence on almost every branch.

Lestrat wiped his fingers on the dry grass. Shaking slightly, he snarled to himself and twitched and shook his head violently, trying to stem the madness within from taking him completely. Gasping, he clamped a hand to his shoulder and leaned against the back of a broad oak. Relishing the cool feel of its bark, he slowly willed himself to calm down, breathing slowly and deeply, trying to rid his mind of the bloodlust and the demon that fought to overtake him. Gradually his breathing eased, and he was able to take stock of the position. His other companions of the Vurunai were laying about, some injured, others less so, but all alive to fight another day. A rare smile threatened to steal across his face; proud was he to fight amongst the Vurunai against overhwelming odds and to prevail.

Lestrat was about to call out to TuT when something caught his eye. A tiny piece of tattered cloak had been caught on a branch, and had he not turned his head to the rest of his guildmates, he wouldn'tve noticed it. Frowning slightly, he lifted his head, staring at the small bit of fabric in wonder as if it were the vision of the great Goddess Herself.

Taff saw Zomb thrown backwards as he stabbed the last remaining attacker. He was about to head over to the giant's body to ensure that it was dead, but James seemed to be doing that. That taken care of, he quickly headed towards Zomb's body to see what he could do. Taff's magical expertise lay in areas other than healing, but he had picked up a little knowledge during his education.
He bent down over his friends body and was relieved to find him still breathing. He pulled a few herbs from a pouch on his belt and set them smoldering in his hand. He wafted the smoke towards Zombs face, the strong smelling aroma works like smelling salts, but Taff didn't trust anything you had make an effort to burn.
He sat back a little and waited for his patient to come round. If this didn't work, he'd have to try some ale. He couldn't recall a time when Zomb had missed a drinking opportunity.

Canute looked round disappointedly, all the big uns were lying down, with the exception of those fighting alongside him. For such a small gnome, he had an awful lot of pent up aggression. He retrieved his axe from the skull of one of the corpses and used it to hack off a finger with a particularly nice gold ring on it. Popping it into a sack that Melody had been trained to bring to him he thought of an appropriate song. One he vaguely remembered dwarves singing came to mind.
Hi ho, hi ho
A looting we will go,
With an axe and sword,
We'll take this hoard,
Hi hooooo,
Hi ho ho ho ho ho.

He busied himself relieving another of a fine looking dagger that would serve him well as a sword. To his horror, the body groaned. He plunged his new sword between the ribs of the chest he was currently standing on, and the groaning ceased. Satisfied that it was now safe to continue, he pulled the sword from between his feet, and went back to his song.

[ooc] Song based on dwarf song in snow white and seven dwarves... like you hadn't guessed[/ooc]

His wife Anna had begun cooking for the evening. Zomb sat at the table watching his wife's art. Because that was what you could call here cooking. It was tremoundes. The smell... ah... the smell...

He woke up with a snap.

"Whoa! Where am I? Who who are you?" he said to the dizzy figure that were bent over him. Then he recalled the fight and reached for his dagger. But It wasn't there. They mustv'e taken it.
But after a while the figure started to take shape and he could see that it was Taff. A bit behind Taff stood James, and at Zombs head stood James horse.

"Oh my, this much attention for a little headache? Come on now." he smiled.
