Defining Rules and Tribunal

Post by Kaz » Sat Sep 26, 2009 5:57 pm

Feel free to discuss idea's for what should be included as the basic forum rules.

We are also introducing a forum called Tribunal.

The current idea is that anyone who feels that they have been treated unfairly by an admin, moderator, or player can create a discussion thread with a poll question and selection of choices. Staff members will act as 'jury' and will have the ability to cast votes in the thread poll.

I was thinking that a 'sleep on it' cause should be in place as a requirment prior to posting a tribunal request.

Any ideas, or opinions relating to the tribunal idea, or general forum rules?

"Have fun or else" pretty much covers it.
Whatever you do, make it simple to understand and not cumbersome to administrate.

Tribunal seems a good idea. Should be clear that the staff has the final word though.

As for rules: it should be simple (i.e. not open for interpretation) and include a few catch-all rules probably (e.g. no porn, no linking to third party sites for commercial purpose, no racism/hatred posts, etc.).

I think that would involve me writing a custom mod for phpbb3.

Could be solved by a Tribunal forum to which people can be given temporary access, then when a verdict has been reached storing them all in a hidden forum. Saves you the hassle of writing a custom mod.

I have created 3 hidden forums under Tribunal.

Courts 1 through 3.

Access to these is via one of three groups.

Rules:

This is a PG-13 rated board system.

1.) No racism, pornogrophy, hacking/warez, or other unethical discussion or content.
2.) Extreme vulgarity and/or sexually explicit topics may be edited and/or removed at the Moderator's descretion.
3.) Topics involving religion and politics and other personal beliefs should be constructive in nature, if they turn hateful or vulgar they will be edited and/or removed at the Moderator's descretion.
4.) Have fun. If you are not able to post and have fun, then chances are anything you say/do will cause others to feel the same way.

Thats pretty much all I can think of. I don't think we need a ton of rules telling people what they can and can't say, we just need rules that help govern or shape the attitudes people come here and post with. If you are extremely vulgar or offensive, then you run the risk of being edited. If you are, Kaz has setup the Tribunal Forum to dispute those types of situations.

I'd love to give someone a warning for 'not having fun'. Just imagine the reply you'd get lol

Imagine how many times you would of had to give that warning on TB???

And you'd end up banning them anyway when they made the thread to complain about it ;p

Got to cut me some slack, I post during the day from my personal laptop on a internet connection tethered from my phone while I pretend to do real work. I just jot down what comes to mind.

Perhaps unethical discussions is a bit to vague, what I was going for there is trying to draw some line on what is or isn't allowed. I don't really want to have a forum that has 100 different rules and requires a parents signature to participate, but at the same time I think having the general "don't be an ass" rule really doesn't cut it anymore.
